Alan Michael Parker is Douglas C. Houchens Professor of English at Davidson College. As an undergraduate student, he was invited to join the graduate poetry workshop at Washington University, where he studied with Donald Finkel, Howard Nemerov, and Mona Van Duyn. He received his M.F.A. from the School of the Arts at Columbia University, where he studied with Carolyn Forché Richard Howard, Denis Johnson, Stanley Kunitz, William Matthews, and Nobel Laureate Josephy Brodsky (with shorter stints with Nobel Laureates Seamus Heaney, Czeslaw Milosz, and Derek Walcott). He joined the faculty at Davidson College in 1998, was promoted to full professor in 2007, and was promoted to the endowed professorship in 2012. He also teaches in the low-residency M.F.A. program at the University of Tampa, where he works with graduate student writers in both poetry and fiction. He is the author of four novels, Cry Uncle (2005); Whale Man (2011), shortlisted for the 2011 ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Award in Literary Fiction; The Committee on Town Happiness (2014); and Christmas in July (2018). And he is the author of eight collections of poems, Days Like Prose (1997); The Vandals (1999); Love Song with Motor Vehicles (2003); A Peal of Sonnets (2006); Elephants & Butterflies (2008); Ten Days (2012), a collaboration with painter Herb Jackson that is housed in the Davidson College art collection; Long Division (2012), winner of the 2012 North Carolina Book Award; and The Ladder (2016), winner of the Brockman-Campbell Award from the North Carolina Poetry Society. Additionally, he served as editor of Imaginary Poets (2005) and co-editor, with Rebecca Hazelton, of The Manifesto Project (2017) His poems have been published in journals and magazines such as The American Poetry Review, The Gettysburg Review, Kenyon Review, The New Republic, The New Yorker, Paris Review, Pleiades, and The Yale Review. And his prose has appeared in The Believer, The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, and several other publications. The Best American Poetry annual has included his poems in two volumes, and 2013 Best American Essays has included his essay "Beach House As Nostalgia Museum." In addition, he has won three Pushcart Prizes, the Fineline Prize from Mid-American Review, the 2013 and 2014 Randall Jarrell Awards, and the Lucille Medwick Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America.
